Queen Margaret’s

The QM Family has nurtured girls to reach their full potential for many years. We’re a small school and our girls are part of a community of people who care for each other and grow as individuals. They develop a wealth of skills for use in their own lives and to make a difference in the world. At the heart of a QM education is a love of learning, which is supported by a healthy body and healthy mind.

As a single-sex school, QM is ideally positioned to educate, inspire and nurture the girls of today, who will be the leaders of tomorrow. In our school, every girl has a voice. Curricula are tailored and timetables are personalised for each student and all are given opportunities to develop and excel. Our girls can captain the Debating team, choose to study Physics or be part of a Rugby team. They enjoy not only equal opportunity but every opportunity. All activities are open to them; they participate, influence and lead. There are no gender stereotypes here – indeed our latest results showed that Mathematics and Science are amongst our strongest subjects.
“In an all girls environment I’ve been able to try so many new things; and the staff are always there to help and encourage you. In a mixed school I wouldn’t have had the confidence.”

So said one of our Sixth Formers. QM encourages a freedom from the sort of tiresome stereotyping still so prevalent in the real world which limits both boys’ and girls’ aspirations. We prepare girls for the real world so that by the time they reach it they are fearless young women capable of anything and unaware that there are things that as girls they ‘shouldn’t’ do.

More than 75% of girls are full boarders, and the quality of our pastoral care and strong sense of community ensure that all girls settle in quickly and join in every aspect of School life with enthusiasm and purpose. Our girls benefit immensely from our horizontal boarding system - at QM, boarding is arranged by year group, which helps the girls to bond. House staff can better focus on and cater for the specific needs of an age group, after all the highs and lows of the girls in Year I are very different to those of the girls in their final year. The accommodation and facilities in each boarding house are age appropriate; Year I settle into School life in a homely farmhouse environment, whereas Upper Sixth girls get a real taste of independent living in preparation for university. This means the different expectations and rules for each age group can be effectively managed.

Our girls thrive on healthy and energetic lifestyles; Sport is very important at QM and the School boasts exceptional facilities. The Creative Arts also play a central role in life at the School. The purpose-built theatre, dance studio and modern art and technology facilities provide the ideal setting for every girl to discover and develop her talents - we are a school that encourages every girl to pursue her interests confidently.

A Queen Margaret's education is an exciting, challenging and enriching experience. When a girl has completed her education at QM she will be a freethinking, courageous individual prepared to take her learning to the next level and her place in a changing world. Every girl we welcome also leaves with our red ribbon of success; it ties us all together and represents the lifelong bonds made and experiences shared.
